    Вебсайт для бизнеса - Jimdo

    Сообщение автор Admin в Пт Фев 10, 2012 11:25 am

    Сервис Jimdo предоставляет возможность, которой в наше время можно мало кого удивить, – создание собственных страниц в Интернете без особых знаний HTML, CSS. При этом в базовые функциональные возможности входит изменение дизайна, структуры сайта и его наполнение, вставка фотографий, видео и RSS. И что самое приятное – бесплатно.

    Проект появился далеко не случайно, где-то около трех лет назад авторы проекта разработали CMS Online-Software, который сейчас является ядром Jimdo. В свой офис в Гамбурге ребята попали благодаря деловому соревнованию, на котором они выиграли 18 тысяч евро для запуска своего проекта. По информации, данной на официальной странице, вся команда состоит из трех основателей и шести сотрудников.

    Идея использовать разработанную CMS для ведения личных интернет-страничек появилась в связи с возрастающим количеством запросов от знакомых, друзей и просто прохожих с просьбой использовать систему для собственных нужд. Вследствие чего CMS была сделана общедоступной, о чем недвусмысленно говорит слоган Jimdo Pages for the People, напоминая близкое русскому человеку: «Землю – крестьянам».

    Для чего же предназначен данный сервис? Если вы хотите создать простой (или не очень) сайт, свою виртуальную визитку в Интернете с больше, чем просто именем, фамилией и номером телефона, то это можно запросто сделать на Jimdo. И для этого совершенно не нужно обладать даже малейшими знаниями в области HTML.

    К нам этот сервис делает ближе еще и то, что 30 января 2008 года была запущена и русская версия системы. На сайте есть возможность пройти тур по сервису, где вам рассказывают основные возможности проекта чуть подробнее.

    Итак, сервис позволяет:
    - получить после регистрации собственную страничку с именем www.ваш_ник.jimdo.com;
    — создать собственную фотогалерею с эффектом Lightbox;
    — отображать галерею с использованием Flash-технологий;
    — размещать файлы для загрузки, чтобы ваши посетители могли их скачать;
    — использовать широкие возможности по редактированию дизайна. Есть возможность менять фон, выравнивание, расположение блоков сайта, изображения в шапке. Кроме загрузки собственных картинок есть возможность использования внушительной базы данных проекта. Также имеется доступ к редактированию HTML- и CSS-кодов шаблона;

    - в вашу страницу можно будет встраивать данные с Flickr!, Youtube, del.icio.us, RSS;
    — закрывать желаемые страницы паролем;
    — управлять рассылкой новостей и сообщений своим посетителям;
    — использовать карту сайта и страницу для печати;
    — использовать гостевую книгу и формуляры на своем сайте;
    — отслеживать статистику посещений;
    — и вдобавок – 500 Мб свободного места.

    Jimdo, как и любой другой подобный проект, предлагает также ряд PRO-функций, доступных после уплаты 5 евро в месяц, включая НДС. Согласитесь, для собственного домена, хостинга и вороха функциональных возможностей это просто смешная цена. За эти деньги вы получаете:

    - собственный домен в любой зоне;
    — собственный электронный почтовый ящик (с услугами POP3, IMAP, Webmail, Antispam, Antivirus и Autoresponder);
    — детализированную статистику;
    — аж целых 5 Гб свободного места;
    — отсутствие всяческой рекламы (хотя сейчас на сайте ее представляют лишь две текстовые ссылки).

    Но Jimdo предоставляет не только возможность размещения и изменения шаблона, но и некоторые функции социальной сети. Возможно:
    - подружиться с другими пользователями Jimdo;
    — отправлять своим друзьям в Jimdo сообщения;
    — информировать друзей и посетителей об изменениях на вашей странице при помощи Newsfeed.

    Итак, взглянем, как же все это работает на практике.
    После регистрации вы получаете готовую страничку по адресу http://ваш_ник.jimdo.com, на которую загружен базовый шаблон в качестве примера. В самом низу страницы есть меню «Вход» для авторизации в качестве администратора.
    Все изменения, которые вы делаете со своей страничкой, проходят на лету, свойства определяются во всплывающих окнах, а результат отображается на странице сразу после изменения. При наведении мышки курсора на текстовые и графические элементы можно увидеть небольшое всплывающее меню, в котором можно управлять очередностью элементов, создавать, удалять их. Похожий принцип работает и для меню сайта – при наведении на него можно увидеть ссылку для работы с ним, которая называется «Редактировать навигацию». В разделе меню «Эскиз» производятся общие действия над внешним видом шаблона вашей страницы. Туда относятся:

    «Эскизы»: выбор расположения главных блоков страницы (шапка, меню, контент, фреймы).

    - Специальные эскизы – выбор эскиза с уже подготовленным специальным оформлением.
    — Собственный эскиз – редактирование HTML и CSS.
    — Настройки – параметры выравнивания страницы, толщина и цвет рамки вокруг сайта.
    — Фоновый образец – выбор цвета фона.
    — Фоновое изображение – установка предлагаемой текстуры (около сотни вариантов) в качестве фона страницы.

    Раздел «Стиль» отвечает за форматирование текстового наполнения вашей страницы. В разделе присутствуют следующие настройки:

    - Формат шрифта — определение формата текста, заголовка и ссылок.
    — Предложения цветов – выбор цвета фона для меню из предлагаемых вариантов.
    — Собственный цвет – определение желаемого собственного цвета фона.

    Раздел сайта «Друзья» используется для управления социальными функциями сервиса – общения с «френдами». Пункт «Сообщение», которое ведет на страницу создания и получения писем от пользователей Jimdo.

    А в разделе «Настройки» имеется достаточно много нужных функций. Рабочая область разделена на блоки – некоторое подобие меню с заголовком и кратким описанием пункта. Что можно делать с этими настройками:

    - управлять страницами, защищенными паролем;
    — просматривать сообщения, полученные из формы на сайте;
    — настраивать ПРОфункции: небольшие настройки модулей flash, галереи, добавление копирайта, третьего уровня вложенности для меню и т. д.;
    — управлять рассылкой;
    — редактировать заголовок, мета-теги всех страниц сайта;
    — вносить изменения в head-область кода html;
    — добавить Favicon;
    — подключить статистику Google Analytics.

    Пункт «Jimdo аккаунт» позволяет прописать некоторые данные о себе, загрузить аватар, выбрать язык интерфейса и т. п.

    Раздел «Статистика» позволяет воспользоваться упрощенной ее версией, и, лишь только заплатив за продвинутый аккаунт, появляется возможность просмотра полной и подробной статистики вашего сайта. Насчет рекламы на сайте – она представляет из себя только блок с последними новостями Jimdo и одной ссылкой на страницу, где описывается, как хорошо иметь свой сайт на Jimdo.

    Послесловие. Что же из себя представляет Jimdo? Удобный онлайн-сервис, позволяющий пользователю легко и просто создать полноценный персональный сайт, отличный от уже надоевшего формата блога. Сервис предоставляет пользователю вполне достаточный набор инструментов для достижения этой цели. Ну а за 5 у. е. в месяц, которые необходимо заплатить за pro-аккаунт, можно получить дополнительные опции, которых вполне достаточно, дабы использовать систему в коммерческих целях – в качестве корпоративного сайта. Большинство из нас привыкли к тому, что роль персональной страницы человека играет его блог. Однако, как кажется и мне, и создателям ресурса Jimdo, многие люди создают блоги только лишь из-за отсутствия знаний в области HTML, CSS, PHP и т. д. А простого и удобного сервиса создания своей странички – не было. До недавних пор.

    Новый графический редактор

    Уважаемые пользователи, у нас для вас большие новости! В конструктор Jimdo добавлен графический редактор Creative SDK от компании Adobe. Теперь вы можете легко и просто придавать закачиваемым изображениям нужный вид. Редактирование, кадрирование, эффекты - и всё это не покидая админ-панель вашего сайта!

    Наши клиенты всегда очень интересовались возможностью редактирования графики. Мы очень рады предоставить вам всё богатство возможностей редактора Adobe Creative SDK. Для того, чтобы воспользоваться им, откройте любой модуль, где используется графика, например, "Изображение", "Изображение в тексте" или "Галерея изображений". Затем, нажмите на кнопку в нижнем левом углу и начните работу над загруженным в модуль изображением.

    Редактор доступен не только на стационарных, но и на мобильных устройствах через наше приложение для iOS и Android. Благодаря этому вы можете добавлять фотографии на ваш сайт прямо с вашего смартфона, а затем редактировать их прямо через модули "Изображение" и "Изображение в тексте".

    Передумали и решили обработать фотографию по-другому? Для этого не нужно повторно загружать её на сайт или пользоваться другим графическим редактором - все изменения можно сделать прямо в режиме редактирования упомянутых модулей.

    Кроме стандартных приёмов редактирования, вам будут доступны различные креативные эффекты наподобие тех, что могут быть вам знакомы по приложению Instagram. Вы сможете украшать ваши фотографии рамками и текстом, редактировать цвета и так далее.

    Вы должно быть уже знаете, что профессиональные, качественные фотографии чрезвычайно важны для представления вашего бренда в сети. Теперь придать им требуемый вид стало ещё проще! Довольно слов, лучше поскорее зайдите в вашу админ-панель, попробуйте поработать с новым редактором и конечно же поделитесь с нами вашими впечатлениями!

    Новинка: адаптивные шаблоны Jimdo

    С какого устройства вы обычно просматриваете свой сайт? На ноутбуке? На смартфоне? Или это зависит от ситуации? С этого момента ваш сайт будет отлично выглядеть на любом используемом вами устройстве, потому что теперь все наши шаблоны стали адаптивными!

    Если вы когда-нибудь пытались разглядеть сайт на крошечном экране, напрягая зрение и постоянно попадая пальцем не по тем ссылкам, то это обновление точно для вас. Некоторое время назад мы начали постепенно и по-одному обновлять шаблоны Jimdo. Сегодня мы рады объявить, что все наши шаблоны, от Амстердама до Цюриха, стали адаптивными!

    Что значит "адаптивный" шаблон? Всё просто: при загрузке сайта на практически любом устройстве, ваш сайт подстроится именно под то устройство, на котором его загружают. Все его элементы автоматически адаптируются для наилучшего просмотра: разрешение, размер изображений, меню, кнопки и так далее. Теперь сайт будет прекрасно выглядеть для всех посетителей с любых устройств — компьютеров или мобильных.

    Что значит адаптивность для вашего сайта?
    - Сайт будет автоматически подстраиваться для экрана любого размера - никаких больше искажённых кнопок, нечитаемых меню и вылезающих за пределы экрана изображений.
    - Стиль вашего сайта (цвета, шрифты, фон) будет единым на всех устройствах.
    - Адаптивность даст вам преимущество в области SEO, так как для поисковых роботов намного проще индексировать адаптивные сайты.
    - Информация в сайдбаре и футере будет легко читаема на любом из мобильных устройств.
    - Ваш онлайн-магазин будет также полностью адаптирован для комфортного пользования со смартфонов и планшетов.
    - Если вы владеете подпиской JimdoBusiness, новый адаптивный шаблон заменит вашу мобильную визитку.

    Как перевести сайт на адаптивную версию?
    Некоторые из вас заметили, что несколько месяцев назад мы начали постепенно заменять старые шаблоны на их адаптивные версии, и многие пользователи тут же перешли на них. Все же остальные при входе в админ-панель увидят панель с предложением провести обновление шаблона.

    Если не видите данную панель, это значит, что вы уже используете новый адаптивный шаблон и вам не нужно ничего менять.

    Нажмите на кнопку апгрейда и вверху вашего экрана откроется опция "Шаблоны" с тремя иконками в правом верхнем углу, нажимая на которые вы сможете увидеть, как ваш сайт будет выглядеть на разных мобильных устройствах после обновления.

    Обратите внимание на то, что нажатием кнопки "Сохранить" вы согласитесь с тем, что ваш шаблон сайта станет адаптивным. Если вы не хотите переходить на адаптивную версию, вы можете нажать кнопку "Отмена" и остаться на старой версии шаблона. Однако, мы всё же рекомендуем вам провести апгрейд - ваши посетители будут за это вам очень благодарны!

    Это обновление доступно пользователям Jimdo, которые используют шаблоны с именами городов. Для пользователей, которые используют шаблоны старого образца, например, "F4242", адаптивность недоступна. Мы рекомендуем вам перейти на шаблоны нового образца и наслаждаться адаптивным дизайном.

    Choose the Best Background for Your Website

    A background image is the first impression a visitor has of your website and could be what keeps them browsing, or closing that window. The right image should grab your audience’s attention and keep them intrigued to find out more about your business or blog.

    You might be wondering, how much is there really to it? So we challenge you to go through this list of possibilities for your background image and see what you can tick off.

    Connect with your audience

    If you check video ad tech company Unruly’s top 20 shared ads for 2016, you will find one common factor—they all evoke emotion. Emotional branding is used in marketing to appeal to viewers, but this can also work for your website background.

    Choose an image that is associated with your blog or business to make the visitor feel something positive or make an emotional connection with your brand. If you want to create a travel blog, use an image of a beautiful location you have traveled to and make the visitor want to join you there. An image that uses movement or with an interesting perspective can really make your background stand out.

    This is a chance to show off your product, location, or yourself in the best light. If one image isn’t enough, you can choose up to 25 images in a running slideshow.

    Find high-quality images online

    Images in high resolution will make your website pop. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to get a beautiful background image for your website. There are plenty of resources out there with free high-quality stock photos.

    If you want a photo of your own product as the background image and don’t want to hire a professional photographer then we have some great tips on how to take a professional photo using a DIY light box.

    Every image whether it’s a photo or logo will have an ideal format, so if you’re not sure whether you should be using a JPG or PNG format for your image you can find out here.

    Pro Tip: If your file size is too large then use a tool like TinyPNG or TinyJPG to lower the file size without compromising on the quality.

    The perfect sizing

    It is often an overlooked factor, but sizing will make all the difference in making your website look more professional. Try cropping any unnecessary background space in the image, so the emphasis is on your product, a person or that holiday destination you’re trying to show off.

    Go for a landscape image rather than portrait, as these will work best for modern computer monitors. The minimum resolution on most computer screens is 1024x768 pixels, so we recommend a background image of around 2000 pixels wide as a good rule of thumb. Uploading an image that is lower than the minimum resolution will result in that 80’s style pixelated look.

    Make sure to check your background on the main browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox and on any mobile devices, so you can be sure your background works on all platforms.

    Pro Tip: If you’re not sure of the pixel size, you can find this on a PC by right-clicking on the image file, choosing “Properties” and then the “Summary” tab. On a Mac, just right click on the image file, choose “Get Info,” and then click on “More Info.”

    Set a Focal Point

    A Focal Point is important to lead the viewer to the target you want them to focus on. This could be your product or an interesting feature in your image. The Focal Point helps to better align background images, so things that matter are not hiding behind the content area or the navigation.

    Use our Style Editor to select the “Background” option, choose an image, then click on the “settings” icon to set a focus on which part of the image you would like to draw the visitor’s eye to. This can be used for any image, including slideshows and there’s no need for Photoshop or any extra tools.

    In one of our latest updates, we have now added a button to “pause” and “continue” your slideshow, so you can add a Focal Point on any image, preview it, then continue with your slideshow.

    Video backgrounds

    Video backgrounds look pretty impressive but it can be a balancing act between a breathtaking background and one that doesn't distract from your website. If you want to show your work in action, you can create a video with a subtle hue so that it isn’t too distracting from the rest of the website as shown on our Jimdo site. Alternatively, a more subtle motion in the background may work better for your business (as shown below).

    To add a video on your Jimdo website, you’ll need to choose a clip from either YouTube or Vimeo. You can grab some royalty-free video clips from sites like Pond5 or AllTheFreeStock.

    We love the Stockholm or San Francisco templates to really show off the full effect of your video background. The Stockholm template has a large Header area which stays partially visible on your other pages so it won’t overpower your content.

    Pro Tip: Try to keep your video short. Jimdo will automatically loop the video from the beginning so it won’t end.

    Solid color backgrounds

    If photography isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other options out there to use as your website background. Try using bold color blocks to make a fun and bubbly statement. Just be sure to check that the colors match your industry and the impression you want to create about your business.

    The background may also impact the visibility of your text so if you really want visitors to just focus on your content then a plain white background will work better. The white space gives your website a clean and more elegant look which will fit the image of a more traditional or serious business.

    Pro Tip: Looking for something more rustic? Try experimenting with texture backgrounds like wood or textile to change it up.

    How to Do Keyword Research Using Keyword Planner

    Keyword research is one of the most important components of search engine optimization (SEO) as well as any other online marketing initiative. Whether you’re a small business owner, a Fortune 500 company, or a new blogger, the time you spend developing a keyword strategy is critical to your success on the web. By narrowing down keywords that accurately describe your business or product, you'll help potential visitors find you online.

    There are countless guides that explain how to do keyword research, but most are either too brief in their explanations or too advanced for the average website owner. The following 5-step plan for researching keywords is the perfect guide for beginners and intermediate users. It will take you from identifying relevant keywords to implementing a successful keyword strategy for your website.

    Step 1: Write down search queries you would use to find your business online

    To start, you need to come up with 10 phrases that your ideal visitors would enter into a search engine. If you’re having trouble thinking of phrases, then ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers:

    1. How would you describe your business in an elevator pitch?

    •These quick, on-the-spot pitches force you to get to the point. In doing so, you’ll find that certain phrases and descriptions come out naturally as your describe your service offering.

    2. Which of your products makes you the most money?

    •Focusing on your most valuable product makes sense when investing time into keyword research. Consider how you might describe this product to someone who has never seen or heard of it before. These descriptions will likely come to be part of your keyword strategy.

    Pro Tip: If your competitors still include meta-keywords in their code, you can easily find them by installing a product like the MozBar. If you’d like to learn more about the MozBar and other great SEO tools, be sure to visit my post on the best free SEO tools. Google and other search engines no longer use meta-keywords in their ranking algorithm, but it can be helpful to know which keywords your competitors target.

    Step 2: Research your initial search queries using a keyword research tool

    Once you’ve narrowed down a list of queries that visitors would ideally use to find you, you’ll want to enter those into a keyword research tool. By doing so, you’ll discover whether people are actually searching for those keyword phrases. You’ll also be given a large list of related queries that you can use to form your final list of terms.

    The best starting point is the Google Adwords Keyword Planner. This is a free tool, but it can only be accessed by signing up for a Google AdWords account. It’s absolutely worth signing up, as this tool has been the bedrock of SEO and keyword research campaigns for years.

    Pro Tip: In recent years, Adwords has made it slightly more difficult for new users to sign up for an account without entering credit card information. Thankfully, we have a little trick to bypass that step. Pay close attention to Step 3 below. If you already have a Google account, this should not apply.

    Here’s how to sign up for a new Adwords account:

    1. Enter or click this URL: https://adwords.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/

    2. Click “Start Now,” in the upper-right corner.

    3. When the “Welcome to Google Adwords!” page has loaded, click the blue link that says “Skip the guided tour.” (See the picture above for reference.)

    4. Next, enter the email address you’d like to use for your account. This does not need to be a Gmail.com email address.

    5. Click “Save and continue.”

    6. Enter your name, password, and birthday. Click “Next step.”

    7. Click “I Agree” to Google’s Privacy and Terms.

    Once you’ve created your account, you’ll want to follow the steps below (or watch the animation above):

    1. Select “Tools” in the top navigation bar.

    2. Click “Keyword Planner.”

    3. Choose the first of four options: “Search for new keywords using a phrase, website, or category”
    • This section will allow you to find new keywords, as well as average monthly search estimates, based on your initial list of relevant queries

    4. Enter your list of search queries into the field provided.

    5. Adjust the targeting of your query entries.
    •For instance, if your potential visitors are mostly based in the United States, then be sure to set the “Targeting Location” to “United States.”

    6. Once you’ve entered your list of queries and adjusted your targeting, you’ll see a list of “Keyword ideas.”
    •These are filtered lists of keyword ideas, as well as their average monthly search numbers.

    Pro Tip: The actual number of visitors you receive for these keywords will always be much lower than the “average monthly searches” numbers that are shown in Google Adwords Keyword Planner. The number of visitors that come to your website will depend on your ranking in search engines and the click-through rate.

    The easiest way to manage this long list of keyword suggestions is to download it as a .CSV file. This will allow you to open it in either Google Spreadsheets, Microsoft Excel, or your preferred spreadsheet tool. From there, you can remove certain phrases that you don’t like or that don’t necessarily make sense for your website.

    Step 3: Select your keywords and filter out the unnecessary ones

    Now that you have a long list of keyword ideas, how do you know which terms to select and use on your website? The first piece of the puzzle is to understand the three main types of keywords: short-, medium-, and long-tail.
    • Short-tail keywords have higher search volumes, but they are very difficult to rank well for (especially new websites). They are generally 1-2 words in length. ◦ Ex. “juice shop”

    • Medium-tail keywords have moderate search volumes, but they are also fairly hard to rank for—though not quite as tough as short-tail keywords. These are generally 2-3 words in length. ◦ Ex. “organic juice shop”

    • Long-tail keywords have low search volumes, and they aren’t nearly as competitive to rank well for. These queries are usually 4+ words in length. ◦ Ex. “organic juice shop san francisco”

    Pro Tip: When it comes to keyword phrases, search engines do not pay attention to “stop words.” These are extremely common words such as the, is, at, which, and on. You may see keyword phrase suggestions such as “organic juice shop san francisco.” But when you’re adding a keyword like this to text on your website, don’t forget to add the stop word back in.

    When you're starting a new website, I’d suggest selecting only medium- and long-tail keywords. This will give you the best chance of getting visitors via search engines. As your website grows and if you begin to rank well for all of your medium- and long-tail keywords, you can always adjust your keyword strategy to include a few short-tail keywords.

    Once you’ve selected your list of medium- and long-tail keywords, you should duplicate that list and then add modifiers to each them. Generally speaking, there are four different modifiers that work very well with almost all keywords.
    • Time and/or Date: "organic juices 2014"
    • Quality and/or Price: "cheapest organic juices", “organic juices under $5”
    • Intent: "buy organic juices", "find organic juices"
    • Location: "organic juices online", "organic juices in san francisco"

    Step 4: Find out which websites rank on Page 1 of Google for each of your keywords

    You absolutely need to see which websites are ranking on the first page of Google for each of your proposed keyword ideas. This is the best way to discover whether your website can compete for the keywords you’ve selected.

    If your list of keyword ideas is long, inputting each keyword phrase into Google may seem like a daunting and time-consuming task. But it’s a crucial step, so please do not skip it, as it will cost you website visits in the future.

    If you’d prefer to enter each keyword phrase into Google and take a look at each website on the first page of Google, be sure to ask yourself and document the following:
    •Are all of the websites big and authoritative (e.g. Apple, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s)?
    •What is the PageRank of each of these websites?
    •What is the Domain Authority of each of these websites?

    To find the PageRank and Domain Authority of websites in search results, you'll need to install the free MozBar plugin.

    If the websites that appear on the first page are not well-known or especially authoritative, then you should consider using that specific keyword. These low-competition keywords will give you the best chance of ranking on the first page. And Page 1 search results account for 92% of the traffic for an average search query.

    For those of you that prefer to use actual hard data to drive your decisions, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial of Moz Analytics. They have a “Keyword Difficulty and SERP Analysis” tool, which allows you to enter a keyword phrase and see various data points that will help you easily decide whether to pursue a particular keyword. If you’re interested in learning more about using the tool, Moz offers a helpful video guide on the Keyword Difficulty Tool.

    Step 5: Apply the chosen keywords to your website

    Once you’ve hand selected relevant and attainable keyword phrases, you need to insert these terms into various parts of your website. Here are the three most important areas of your website where keywords should be added:
    1.Title tags
    2.Meta descriptions
    3.All other text on your website

    Title tags

    A title tag is essentially the title of a web page—it’s the first line of text that you see when results appear in a search engine.

    It’s also one of the most important on-page SEO elements for ranking well in search. As I mentioned in my local SEO marketing post, small businesses should consider implementing the following title tag format for their homepage: industry-specific keyword(s) – city, state abbreviation – business name.
    •Organic Juices - San Francisco, CA - Asterisk Juice Co.

    As you build out other pages on your website, you should ensure that a relevant keyword is positioned at the front of that page’s title tag. Be careful not to make these too long, as Google will truncate the text after ~55 characters (including spaces).

    Meta descriptions

    A meta description is the preview snippet for a given page. It can be seen below the title tag in search results.

    While Google and other search engines have said that meta descriptions aren’t used in their ranking algorithms, it’s still important to include relevant keywords here while also explaining what exactly the page is about. A meta description is a web page’s best call to action, so be sure to write compelling copy here, as it will greatly affect your clickthrough rate.

    All other text on your website

    Lastly, and arguably the most important, include your keywords in the copy of your website. No page should have the same keyword more than a few times per page, and the keyword should also fit naturally into the copy at all times. For example, don’t write sentences like this: I love the organic juice at that best cheap organic juice under $5 place in San Francisco.

    Pro Tip: The majority of traffic to your web pages will come from keywords you didn’t optimize for. Don’t ever over-optimize a website or a web page for just few terms. If you write compelling copy that also naturally includes a few relevant keywords, you’ll do much better in the long run.

    Quick and Easy Keyword Research Ideas

    When it comes to search engine optimization, perception is not reality. For example, many website owners think they have a better chance of understanding the complexities of quantum physics than SEO. In reality, there are several easy-to-comprehend tools and reference points that make learning SEO both quick and painless. If you can spare a few minutes, I’ll show you how to become fearless about keyword research—one of SEO’s most crucial processes.

    First of all, it’s important to understand how to use Google Adwords Keyword Planner, but you shouldn’t let that be your only source of keyword inspiration. In fact, as search engine algorithms become more and more complex, you absolutely must take advantage of all the tools and concepts available to you. If you want to succeed on the web, more often than not you have to be creative. So let’s get started.

    Keyword Predictions With Google Autocomplete and Ubersuggest.io

    Google’s autocomplete is a powerful tool for Internet marketers of all levels. In essence, Google’s tool shows you high-volume variations of search requests. Say hello to more keyword opportunities for you to target!

    The best part about this feature is that the variations, or “predictions” as Google calls them, are based on real user queries that vary depending on language and location. Google will even offer you suggestions for every letter of the alphabet. How cool is that?

    But if you don’t feel like running through the ABCs, then check out the free aggregator tool, Ubersuggest. After entering a keyword or phrase, Ubersuggest will give you the most popular variations of your search term, as well as alphabetized predictions. In addition to saving countless hours and thousands of keystrokes, it’s one of the best ways to find new keyword ideas. There’s even a word cloud option that helps you visualize common terms associated with your query.

    Popular and Trending With Google Related Searches

    Have you noticed the collection of words and phrases at the bottom of a Google search page? Well, you probably guessed it! Those are what Google refers to as their “Related Searches.” It’s similar to the autosuggest feature mentioned above, except that “Related Searches” offer a broader mix of keyword opportunities.

    As you can see below, you’ll find modifiers added to the beginning, middle, or end of your original search phrase. You may even find the appropriate acronym for your search if one exists. Either way, you’re bound to discover at least one or two common search phrases that you likely hadn’t thought of before. These results are also based on the most popular or trending searches relevant to your query. So remember, don’t be afraid to let Google’s mountain of search data help you with your keyword research.

    Google Trends and a Multidimensional View

    Okay, okay. At this point, you must be thinking I have an obsession with Google. And if you were to ask me such a question directly, I’d be inclined to say “yes.” The fact is most SEOs—and nearly every website owner—are currently at the mercy of Google. For me, that’s both good and bad. It’s never ideal to be reliant on one product, but at the same time, we’re fortunate that they offer so many tools to help website owners succeed.

    This next Google offering is one that’s indispensable, but often overlooked. Google Trends allows you to see past and present search trends, data, and visualizations. While keyword research may seem one dimensional, Google Trends allows you to analyze search queries with a multidimensional view. Here are a few things Google Trends can help with in terms of keyword research:
    •Discover which searches are popular, trending, or declining
    •Compare interest levels of multiple sets of keywords
    •Sort results by date, location, and language
    •Download larger lists of related search queries

    Just remember to stay focused on your task at hand. Even though I’ve been using Google Trends for years to help with keyword research, I still find myself performing irrelevant searches like the one above. But knowing that “pizza” continues to trend upwards while “justin bieber” trends downwards makes me feel much better about the world today. Am I right?

    Keyword Strategies Built From Your FAQs

    For my last keyword research tip, I’d like to steer away from Google and ask you to look closer at your own website. For every product or service that you offer, your customers are going to have questions. But do you know what their frequently asked questions are? If you have a sales or customer support team, they’re a great place to start asking.
    •What questions do your customers frequently ask?
    •What are the most common pain points?
    •What hurdles do you encounter before closing a sale?

    Once you’ve gathered a handful of everyday questions or issues, you’ll have a better understanding of some of the important themes you’ll want to address on your website. Let me give you an example of how this worked for Jimdo:

    A few years ago, Jimdo users frequently asked for information about website widgets. Some wanted tips on the best photo, video, and audio widgets. Others needed guidance on social media plugins and embeddable surveys. Regardless of the exact need, Jimdo saw the usefulness of adding this information to their website. They first added an impressive list of tools, widgets, and other resources to their Support Center, and then they wrote a more informative post, titled “20 Widgets to Improve Your Website,” for their blog. Since that time, these have been two of the most-visited pages on their Support Center and blog. The blog post even ranks first in Google for dozens of relevant keyword phrases.

    Final Thoughts

    So you see, there are quite a few strategies and tools available to everyone that can help with keyword research. There’s no need to be a gifted mathematician or an influential physicist to become knowledgeable about SEO. You simply need to get over any fears, learn more about what’s available, and think creativity. In a lot of ways, it’s very much like building a website. And I know you’ve already succeeded at that!

    If you’re interested in learning more about keyword research, be sure to visit my post on How to Do Keyword Research Using Keyword Planner. It’s an easy-to-follow 5-step plan on how to use Google’s keyword research tool and it’s perfect for beginner and intermediate users. In addition, if you’re just getting started with on-page search engine optimization, then I highly recommend this post on how to influence on-page SEO. And remember, if you recognize the importance of SEO and begin to incorporate some of these strategies, you’ll be one step ahead of your competitors in this increasingly competitive online world. Best of luck!

    How to Use Visual Marketing to Boost Your Website Traffic

    There has been a sea change in how internet users consume their online data. As a consequence, marketers are regularly forced to keep up to date, and practically every expert worth their salt understands the importance of making online data more attractive. Readers are no longer happy to stay on a webpage and scroll through a giant wall of text with the occasional paragraph.

    In 2016 practically every major social network such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (among others) realized the importance and potential of visual marketing. For example, tweets containing images receive 150% more ‘retweets’ than messages without images while Facebook posts perform 130% better when images are attached. Clearly, visual marketing is crucial in making sure your data reaches your target audience so how can you use it to boost traffic to your website?

    What is visual marketing?

    It is a method of using visual aids to tell visitors the story of your brand. Research proves that it makes your marketing more memorable and credible to your target audience. Up to 90% of information that comes to the brain is visual and up to two-thirds of people are ‘visual learners’. It’s really quite surprising that it took us so long to realize the fundamental importance of using images, videos and illustrations to present data!

    With visual marketing, your website:

    • Attracts busy people who are lured in by the clarity of your data.

    • Makes it easy for readers to digest vast amounts of information.

    • Increases your chances of being found on organic search (with the correct use of alt tags).

    • Boosts your social media audience share.

    Let’s take a look at the best visual aids to use for your website.

    How to boost your brand identity

    Use video

    High-quality video marketing can drive your website into the stratosphere. You can condense an incredible amount of information into a short, easily digestible explainer video. Marketing 101 dictates that you must first identify your target audience’s problem before offering a solution. What better way to do this than by showing your product/service in action?

    Branded video content is likely to take over; it involves releasing a video under your company name, offering useful information and persuading viewers to take action with a subtle CTA. Other types of video include How-To, Animated, Demonstration and Testimonials. Check out these video marketing statistics:

    • Video could represent up to 74% of internet traffic by the end of 2017.

    • Consumers are 300% more likely to watch a video about a product rather than read a description.

    • According to a study by Eyeview, adding video to a landing page increases conversions by over 80%.

    Use images

    Video marketing can be expensive, and not everyone can afford it. Don’t despair; using professional quality photographs and pictures will still increase your website’s conversion rate and traffic. As a bonus, it is far cheaper than video.

    Despite advances in technology, or perhaps because of them, modern consumers have a lower attention span than ever before. As a result, it is crucial to break up blocks of text with images relevant to the content. While you’ll ideally use professional pictures, it is possible to use online platforms to create good quality images or purchase stock photography. Alternatively there are also a good range of free high-quality stock images available out there.

    Here are some statistics linked to the use of images:

    • Snapchat users share 540,000 photos a minute.

    • Articles with images receive almost double the views of those with no pictures.

    • Instagram had more than 500 million users as of June 2016.

    Use infographics

    Infographics are a casual statistician’s dream. They are used to showcase complex data and statistics in an easy-to-read format. A web design expert comes in handy here as your infographics must have an attractive layout. Designers must combine the right fonts, shape, and colors to present your data in the best possible light. When you get it right, your infographics will be shared across social media and blogs! Let’s look at some statistics:
    •People are over four times more likely to complete a task if they follow a text and illustration combination when compared to text alone.
    •Infographics are liked and shared 200% more often than any other form of content.

    Visual marketing—what does the future hold?

    We have just scratched the surface of what visual marketing is capable of. The attention spans of Internet consumers continue to get shorter so marketers must look for ways to present meaningful data in a quick and easy to digest manner. As always, Google really rules the roost. The net’s most popular search engine has long since factored visuals into its ranking criteria, and this will continue.

    Meanwhile, social media sites dedicated to images continue to grow while Facebook and Twitter also reward users that use visuals in their marketing efforts. If you don’t have a clue how to begin your campaign, get in touch with a high-quality designer, let them know your brand’s vision and start planning a strategy as soon as possible.

    And Action! Project Planning Lessons from Film Production

    Making a commercial is a complex and rather expensive undertaking. This is why filming is planned very precisely, so the film is finished in time without breaking the budget. We asked the director of the new Jimdo TV commercial, David Aufdembrinke: What can you learn from making films that you can apply to your own projects? For example, building your own website?

    Reading time: 6 Minutes

    In January our new commercials started running on TV. If you happen to be living in Germany, you may have seen them. At the end of November, we shot the film in two days under the direction of David Aufdembrinke in Hamburg. The Hamburg director has previously made music videos for Beginner (a famous German rap group) and the Beatsteaks!

    Whilst filming for Jimdo, he directed over forty people at the location. Make-up, lighting, props, camera. Because it needs precise planning. Every unscheduled alteration, every forgotten prop—costs not only time, but a lot of money. That's why we asked David what we can learn about making films that we can successfully implement in our own projects.

    1. Not without my storyboard

    The storyboard shows each scene to be filmed, as a drawn sketch. Sometimes the storyboard is highly professional. And sometimes even famous directors help with stick figures. The most important aspect of the storyboard is to give you an accurate idea of what you want to shoot and how all the parts end up in the end. Because without an idea of the end result, the danger is quite high of getting tangled up on the way. Storyboards can actually be drawn for any project. Including a website. Simply start with a piece of paper and roughly sketch how you want to present the website. And if you don’t like the sketch, you can just throw it away and make a new one.

    2. Schedule the "shooting time"

    With the storyboard, I can estimate roughly how much time a shoot will take. This time is then scheduled as a rotation day. On these days there are only shoots. Having a defined timeframe for implementing a project is super-important. Only then can I concentrate fully on every detail. The funny thing about it is the time estimate is almost always right. I even think that a thing only takes so long as the time you give it. For example, if you have the feeling that you need a day to rework your website, it will probably take a day.

    3. Small breaks and nerves of steel

    Every shoot is pretty tightly organized—after all, there is a schedule that needs to be respected. And shoots can sometimes be quite long. Nevertheless, everyone must give their best to make it really good. That is why it’s important, even if it becomes stressful, to take enough breaks and ensure there’s good food and drink. This way the team keeps their concentration and good mood so everyone constantly gives their best (beer is only for after the shoot!). I believe fun and enthusiasm at work increase the quality and always ends up being noticeable in the film. This also applies to every other project.

    4. Simply push through

    As soon as a shooting day begins, there’s no turning back. No more doubts are allowed. You just have to breathe in deeply and trust the process. Which means going through the to do list step by step and hoping the plan will work. Which it usually does.

    And obviously, sometimes I only notice during shooting that an idea doesn’t go as I imagined. In this case I can still improvise and try something new or drop the idea. I know, due to the solid preparation beforehand, exactly what is needed creatively and content-wise at this point. In the end the only thing that matters is getting the film out the door. It’s worth remembering that the initial idea changes and evolves naturally on its long journey into being, thereby unfolding to its full potential.

    5. That’s a wrap

    The end of every shooting day ends with a tiny celebration. The entire team puts so much energy into the shoot that they deserve a hug at the very least. A beer is even better. Even if you work alone on your project, you shouldn’t forget to celebrate. Even if you just hug yourself. We deserve it!

    In film, the work doesn’t end after filming. It only begins, because only when I’ve filmed can the film material be cut. That's when I see whether the film was a success and my plan worked. Because as soon as you sit in the editing suite you’ve got to work with the filmed material you’ve got. This is easier with a Jimdo website, for example, which you can rework at any time.

    Can David’s experiences in film production be transferred to your projects? Or how do you plan a project? Let us know in the comments!

    CTR & Bounce Rate: Improve Click Behavior in Google

    If you followed the steps in my last post, search engines have indexed your site and people are now visiting you via Google. That’s great! The next question is, how do you make the most of this?

    While you may want more visitors, you want the right visitors—people who are looking for exactly what you have to offer, and who will be happy to find your site.

    That’s why in this post I’ll go over how to improve the way your web pages show up in search results, how to encourage more people to click on your pages, and how to make sure they are happy once they reach your site.

    How do search engines display your site?

    People see only a small bit of your website in the search results. That small bit convinces them to click on your site—or not. So, by improving your listing in the search results, you can make more people click.

    Here’s how a website typically appears:

    This listing is made of different parts: the Page Title (Chipmunk), the Site Title (Wikipedia) and the Page Description, which is the paragraph of text underneath.

    With Jimdo, you can decide what you want your page titles, page descriptions, and site title to be—and you can adjust them in your SEO settings. Let’s drill down a little deeper.

    Page Title

    If Google thinks a page on your website matches a search phrase, it will show the page title in the search results. That’s why it’s important to give each page on your website a unique page title and make sure it matches the actual content that’s there. By default, your Page Title will be whatever the page is called in your website navigation (Home, About, Contact, etc.), but you can change this if you’d like.

    Site Title
    While every page can (and should) have a different Page Title, you only get one Site Title for your entire website. This is typically the name of your website, and will be added to the end of each Page title after a dash. You can set your Site Title by clicking on Site Performance in your Menu.

    So for example, people might see your ‘About Us’ page in search results like this:

    About Us — Benny’s Best Burgers

    Page Description
    Every page on your website has its own topic. That means it has its own keywords and it deserves its own description. The description doesn’t make your page rank better, but it is visible in the search results and provides a “teaser” to encourage people to click.

    If you haven’t written a description, Google automatically shows some text from the page. Usually that is the bit of text that made Google think your page is a good match for the search phrase.

    A description should be short or it will get cut off in the search results. As a general guideline you can aim for about 150 characters, including spaces. In your SEO settings, Jimdo will show you a Google preview so you can see how your description will look in the search results.

    CTR: Do people click on your page?

    So now we've covered how your website appears in search results. The next step is to think about whether or not people actually click on it when they see it. What we want to improve here is the CTR: the clickthrough rate.

    Let’s say your page is shown to 100 people in Google. If one of those people clicks on your page in the search results, that gives you a clickthrough rate of 1%.

    As a general rule, the clickthrough rate increases as your page appears higher on the first page of search results. The reason for that is pretty simple: people don’t usually want to scroll very far, so they go with one of the first options.

    Tip: To follow these next steps, you'll need to set up Google Search Console (formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools). This is a free tool from Google that gives you all sorts of information about who is visiting your website. Haven't gotten around to this yet? No worries. Here are instructions for how to do it.

    You can see the CTR for your site in Google Search Console:
    •Log in on your Search Console account
    •Go to Search Traffic > Search Analytics
    •Click the CTR checkbox in the top bar

    You can now see the CTR for your pages. To give that some context, it’s good practice to also uses the checkboxes for Impressions and for Position. You can then see how often a page was shown to searchers and at what average position. You can filter by page or keyword.

    If your page wasn’t shown to searchers often, try selecting a longer time period. By using more data, the patterns become clearer.

    Bounce rate: Do visitors stay on your website?

    It’s one thing to get people on your page. But if we want that to help your business, we need to keep them there. Getting someone to step into your store doesn’t help if they then step out again immediately.

    If someone arrives at your website but then doesn't click through to any other pages, we call that a bounce. Your bounce rate is the percentage of visitors that visit only one page on your site and leave again.

    You can find this information in Google Analytics:
    •Log in on your Google Analytics account
    •Go to Behavior > Site content > All pages
    •You can now see a column that shows the bounce rate for each page

    The hard truth is: every website has a bounce rate. We at Jimdo have it, and really big sites like Amazon or Facebook have it as well. So we may not be able to stop people from ‘bouncing’, but we can try to understand what makes them click away. Knowing that, we can try to bring our bounce rate down.

    Why people bounce

    If people bounce, it’s usually because what they see on your site doesn’t match what they are looking for. Don’t take this the wrong way: it doesn’t mean your site isn’t good. It just means that it doesn’t match that searcher’s wishes.

    Page doesn’t match search intent

    Let’s say I am looking for the ultimate cappuccino. (aren’t we all?) If I search for ‘ultimate cappuccino’ on Google, I might end up on the site of ‘Ultimate: the best instant cappuccino powder’. The moment I realize I am looking at instant cappuccino powder, I go back to the search results: this was not what I wanted.

    Sometimes your site will offer something that people aren’t looking for. The only thing you can do there is make your site and your descriptions as clear as possible.

    Page doesn’t match description

    Of course, I keep looking for the ultimate cappuccino, and I might see a description in Google that reads: ‘The ultimate cappuccino: winner of the Cappuccino Award 5 years in a row’. Now, that sounds promising! But when I get to the site, it turns out they tasted their own cappuccino, didn’t compare it to any others, and decided to give it an award. Back to the search results I go: this was not what was suggested to me!

    Writing a fantastic description can improve your CTR, but if your page can’t deliver on that promise, those visitors will bounce.

    Improving your bounce rate

    If you want to improve your bounce rate, use Google Analytics to find pages that have a large number of visits and a high bounce rate. Ask yourself what people might expect when they see that page listed in Google. Does your page deliver on that? If not, you can either change the description or change the page itself.

    Testing CTR and Bounce Improvements

    To improve the CTR for your pages and lower the bounce rate, it's time to experiment! Here’s how you can set that up:

    •Use Google Search Console to find a page that is shown to searchers often, but that might have a low CTR or a higher-than-normal bounce rate.
    •Write a new page description for it.
    •Let Google update the listing (see box at right for how to do this ).
    •Use Search Console and Analytics to track the CTR and bounce rate every week
    •Run this for several months to gather enough data

    Don’t test all your pages at once. By testing one page at a time, you can be sure that any changes in CTR or bounce rate are the results of your experiment. You may see some weekly fluctuations. Those should be steady for all pages, but different for your test page.

    Run your experiment for at least a month. Again, you want to make sure that any results you see are not a coincidence.

    CTR & Bounce Rate: Looking at the results

    So, you see results in your experiment. How should you interpret them?

    High CTR, lower bounce rate

    This is perfect. People see your page, many click it and only very few leave straight after visiting that page. Don’t change anything.

    High CTR, high bounce rate

    It seems your description and page title really make searchers happy, but the page then doesn’t offer what they are looking for. Check if you aren’t making too many promises.

    Low CTR, low bounce rate

    Once people reach your page, they like it. That’s good. However, not many people click on it in the search results. Can you make your description and page title more appealing?

    Low CTR, high bounce rate

    This is the bad scenario. Hardly anyone clicks on this page. And if they do, they usually leave without looking at anything else on your site. Probably best to go back to the drawing board with this page.

    Getting the right people to your website is what good search engine optimization is all about. With a little SEO work, you can help search engines match your site to the right audience, and entice people to click on (and stay on) your pages. Any other SEO head-scratchers? Let me know in the comments.

    Think Outside the Box! (Why You Shouldn't Read Articles Like This)

    Hands up who just thought “what kind of a stupid title is that for a blogpost?” A blogpost about why you shouldn’t read articles like this (or entire books on these topics) at all? Well, i'm convinced of the truth of it and i'm willing to bet a few of you will nod your heads in agreement when reading this post

    Recently in a meeting, the words “let’s think outside of the box” slipped out of my mouth without thinking. Afterwards, I was not only embarrassed but made a mental cross on my Bulls**t Bingo list for meetings. I also wondered if this statement was ever helpful, at any level. Maybe I should get some advice on the subject from the Internet? Googling sometimes helps…

    Perhaps you even have one of those motivation books in your hand or have stumbled upon one of the countless articles in magazines or online? Those that promise to help you finally overcome writer’s block, to develop the most creative idea of your life, to arrive at a brilliant business idea in 5 minutes or to develop a business plan in a further 15 minutes. Or even to just simply think more “outside the box.” And so on

    The most brilliant thing about all these books is, in my opinion, their existence. It was a great idea for the respective authors to write a book about how to achieve this or that. To sell readers the idea that only a maximum of 182 pages of experience and tips by the author lie between now and the best idea in the world.

    But if it were so easy to develop ideas, why do you need a book for it? And why hasn’t every reader had sales go through the roof with their brilliant idea? Because it really isn’t so easy. But the idea that it could be, is incredibly enticing

    The story of the pink elephant

    For me, it plays out something like this. If someone says to me, "I want you to think outside of the box, now!", I am—above all—blocked. I block myself and my thoughts by the compulsion to have to come up with a completely different idea now. What are the chances that the idea is just going to walk around the corner and yell "Look! Here I am!"? It's kind of like when someone says, "DON’T think about a pink elephant." What are you thinking about? I thought so.

    The same is true with motivation books or calls for immediate creativity. If somebody writes that it’s easy to develop the idea of your life in this many steps, with which you can walk happily and self-satisfied to success, I feel—frankly—pressured, when it doesn’t work for me. At first, everything sounds quite inspiring, the book/article is great, but then you try it and it doesn’t work out. That’s when Rupert kicks off (you remember Rupert, that oh-so-helpful voice in your head who tells you all the things you can’t do?): "This is all on you. I bet all the other people who read this book have already started on the road to success. They’re certainly more determined—or maybe they just did it right."

    Thanks Rupert but that’s not exactly helpful.

    The first stumbling block is Rupert, followed by the next hurdle: Your self-confidence hitting rock bottom. And then you sit there, a Rupert sitting opposite you, with a "I-could’ve-told-you-this-would-happen" look on his face. You’re then in a so-called creative dilemma, from which you only get out once you realise that it’s not possible to just bubble with ideas at the push of a button. Because honestly, when do you have your best ideas? Probably in the moments when you’re relaxed, feel great, are “in the flow” (a subject, my colleague Christian has written a great article about), exchanging ideas with people who inspire you and especially when you have a lot of fun with something. That's how I feel at least. But just as creativity doesn’t work at the push of a button, the same goes for the "relax at the push of a button", right?

    Perfect is the opposite of good

    So if you're stuck in creative limbo, it's not so easy to get out again (or is there a book on that?) "Get out of a creative slump in 5 easy steps" or "Finally relax in 10 Minutes.” Probably

    In films, the first step is often the following: After a desperate low, the main character has finally had enough and he or she gathers all the motivational self-help books and throws them collectively into the trash can, (the funniest cover easily readable on top). And as symbolic as it may be in Hollywood—no longer listening to well-meaning advice, not letting them make you feel pressured or influencing you can be a real first step. Whoever spends too much time on the theoretical meta-level of their project and browsing books, instead of simply trying something out, finds it increasingly difficult to get their ideas out into the world

    Sure, there are things you can’t just try out and see if it works—legal texts for an online store for example. But you don’t have to think about it yourself, that’s why there are experts. And if I want to write an "about me" text on my website today and don’t like it tomorrow, I can just change it again. Instead of waiting weeks to write anything at all. Done is better than perfect

    Do your own thing!

    Just do it. This sometimes sounds much more difficult than it really is. And the more you think about a task, a challenge, a change, the bigger and more powerful it becomes to us and the more unattainable it seems in our minds. Doing is usually not the most difficult part, but thinking about it can make small things in our thoughts seem like huge, insurmountable hurdles. We all know the feeling when we finally tick off a long overdue task from the list, the feeling of relief and the thought "Hey, that wasn’t so difficult. Why did I wait so long?"

    The more we make things simple, rather than build up our own giant obstacles, the less we have to deal with our Ruperts. They thrive on these dilemmas—as they provide a lot of material to be afraid of and to argue against. And in the case of Rupert, no one has written a motivational book about it yet. Not that we would recommend it

    6 Ways to Save When Starting Your Small Business

    For many potential entrepreneurs eager to start their own business, there are usually at least three reasons they cannot possibly do so right now. And at the top of that list is often the perceived cost of starting that new business—which they can’t possibly afford.

    While it’s certainly true that every new business comes with some level of expenses, you don’t actually need a million dollars from the friendly neighborhood venture capitalist to build your own business. According to a survey by global freelancing platform, PeoplePerHour, 80% of entrepreneurs surveyed started their business with less than £4,000 ($5,200).

    A very important step when drafting your list of startup costs is determining which items are necessary parts of your fledgling company—and which you can do without. By starting small and thinking outside the box, a savings-savvy entrepreneur can make his or her dream business an affordable reality.

    1. Skip the Traditional Office

    Fortunately for many just starting out, one of the most expensive items on the list of business needs is also one of the most flexible: office space. Before you run out and spend $30 a square foot or more on commercial office space, you should consider if you really need it at all.

    Regardless of any fanciful dreams of a penthouse suite in the posh business district, the truth is your average new business simply may not benefit from renting a large space. Depending on the size and nature of your new venture, it can likely be run out of your home for at least the first few months, if not significantly longer.

    Additionally, with a wide variety of ways to communicate and share files remotely, you may even be able to forgo the pricey rented offices indefinitely. A recent Gallup survey shows approximately 43% of U.S. workers spent at least some portion of their time working remotely, and the trend is gaining traction around the globe.

    Of course, the solitary life isn’t right for everyone. If you’re tired of staring at your own four walls, give a shared or temporary office a try. Sites like LiquidSpace and ShareDesk can help you find a new workspace to kick your creative juices into action.

    2. Go Developer-Less

    In today’s modern click-click-buy world, your business is hardly a business if it doesn’t have a web presence. That’s particularly true for your brand-new business, which lacks an established customer or client base.

    Before blanching at the idea of potentially spending hundreds for a developer to put together your page—there’s a platform for that. Jimdo users can choose from dozens of clean, professional templates to build a complete website from start to finish, including incorporating a blog and creating an online store, without ever touching a single line of code.

    What’s more, Jimdo’s free package includes everything you need to build a clean, professional-looking website, with the chance to upgrade and add your own professional domain. In fact, Jimdo’s been named the best free website builder platform due to its easy interface that welcomes non-programmer business owners.

    3. Wear Many Hats

    Another important part of evaluating your real business needs is to take a hard look at potential employees. Although the goal may be to become a 30-store chain or million-unit sales success, you aren’t going to need a full staff of 100 employees to start; in fact, you may need to start with, well, none.

    Not only do employees come with wages, but, in many countries, they also come with taxes, insurance, and a huge variety of other costs, which can quickly add up to a very pricey professional. Instead, handle what you can yourself while you’re starting out. This can include engaging in some sweat equity as your own flyer distributor, or DIY by building your own light box for killer product photos.

    In the case you absolutely can’t handle something yourself—such as designing an eye-catching brand logo for your new company—you should contract instead of hire on. Freelancers and other contractors provide all the benefits of experienced professionals, without the added fees associated with a permanent employee.

    4. Find Rewards Where You Can

    While saving on the big-ticket items is good, a lot of small savings can also add up over time, so look for them where you can. Some methods, like using an Office Depot promo code to save on paper and ink, will require regular effort, but the era of digital coupons and sales flyers has made the process easier.

    For those who want a more set-it-and-forget-it method of savings, think about joining the brand loyalty programs likely offered by many of your most-shopped stores. And if you need to travel frequently for your new business, don’t forget to join the rewards program of your favorite airline or hotel brand.

    Another simple way to save without a lot of extra effort is through a solid credit card rewards program. Some of the best cash back credit cards give up to 5% back on your qualifying purchases, meaning you can save big on many of the things you’re buying anyway. Of course, be sure to pay your bill in full every month to avoid accumulating debt and paying interest on your purchases. If your balances rolls over from month to month, the interest charges can outweigh the cash-back rewards earned.

    5. If You Tweet It, They Will Come

    Although we all know marketing is important, many new business owners may not be sure how to go about it. Do you put up a billboard and some neon lights? Take out an ad in a local publication? Spend thousands on a television commercial?

    None of the above. For the typical small business, one of the best ways to get the word out is via the web; in particular, the new standard for basic marketing is social media. Whether sharing photos of the latest products through Instagram or tweeting about the best dessert in town, millions of consumers are on social media—and you should be, too.

    The best part? Just about anyone can create and execute an effective social media strategy for their business with a little research and planning. Building and maintaining a social media presence is especially easy for Jimdo users, who can quickly share new posts across different social media platforms.

    6. Trade Up—Or At Least Laterally

    Another trick to making your new venture a little more affordable is to go old school—really old school. That’s right: bartering. Once the cornerstone of the human economy, bartering is less common in our industrialized world, but may still be a great way to get a product or service you otherwise couldn’t afford.

    For example, you may need a professionally-designed product brochure, and your friend the designer may need a few hours of your personal fitness coaching—or even just a good babysitter. Trading on your personal skills, even those that may not be directly related to your new venture, may not only get you the goods, but also help build a good personal or professional relationship.

    In addition, try putting some of your old or unused stuff to use by swapping it for something your business actually needs by checking the local paper or websites like Craigslist. You may even be able to upcycle what you need through sites like Freecycle, where people give away things for free in hopes someone else can reuse it in a productive way.

    Don’t Let Your Budget Stall Your Dreams

    Starting something new can be scary, but it can also be thrilling. And starting your own business could change your life for the better—so don’t allow the perceived costs get in the way of your dreams.

    Despite popular lore, you don’t need to be rich to be your own boss. With the right research and planning, just about any intrepid entrepreneur can find ways to save on their new business, turning an expensive dream into the affordable adventure of a lifetime!

    Spring Cleaning Ideas to Make Your Website and Spirit Shine

    Ah, May, The flowers are coming up, the snow has melted, and the spring issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine arrives in my mailbox. Not surprisingly, Martha has a lot of projects in mind for spring cleaning—washing pillows, scrubbing windows, cleaning gutters...all of which I’m sure she does herself, right?

    But there’s actually an emotional benefit to all that hard work. A little spring cleaning can improve your mood, reduce stress, and boost your creativity. It’s not just that we spring clean because things are dirty. It’s because the act of doing so actually makes us feel better.

    Now that your hygge-full winter hibernation is over, take a few minutes to straighten up your workspace and your website with these ideas. You may find that it clears your mind and gets you ready to achieve your next big thing.

    Reading time: 3 Minutes

    Clean off your desk—and get a plant

    Piles of paper don’t just increase stress—they can actually make you feel as though your work is endless, because even though you’ve finished what you’re working on, it still looks like there’s tons more to be done.

    But don’t assume that a “clean” desk has to be completely bare. Researchers have actually found that the trend towards spartan or lean office spaces makes people miserable. Piles of paper and dirty plates aren’t helpful, but pictures, souvenirs, and greenery can make you perform better. Just having a houseplant in your line of sight increases someone’s productivity and memory, they found.

    Delete outdated info on your website

    It’s the website equivalent of cleaning out your junk drawer. Outdated, irrelevant information is one of consumers’ biggest pet peeves when it comes to business websites. And we’re all guilty of it. You update a web page with news that’s “coming soon” and then weeks later forget that it’s there. To your customers, it looks like you think January 2017 is just around the corner—and that’s not the best way to come across as the on-the-ball entrepreneur you are.

    So take a few minutes to review your pages:
    •Is your contact information still current? Are you directing people to a voicemail or email inbox that’s full?
    •Are you displaying a social media feed for an account you’re no longer updating?
    •Are you promoting events that have already happened, products you don’t sell anymore, news that’s stale, or classes from February? Delete, delete, delete!
    •Are you making references to things you’re going to do in the future….but those things have already come and gone?

    Hint: If you decide to delete or hide an old page, check your statistics first to see if it gets a lot of traffic. It might be a good idea to set up a URL redirect to more current info so people visiting the old page don’t get a 404 error message.

    Add some fresh content

    When you clear away the old, it’s probably time to write something new, too. For many of us, we write our “About” page once and then forget all about it. But maybe you’ve accomplished something new, added a new skill, or started a project.

    As an added bonus, adding fresh content will also encourage search engine crawlers to visit your site more often and improve your search engine ranking.

    Check how your website looks on a mobile phone

    If you usually edit your website on your computer, you probably don’t actually see it very often on a mobile phone or tablet. This means you might be missing some small design fixes that could make life for your mobile visitors much easier.

    You can even check your mobile website right from your desktop when you’re in “View Mode.” Just click on the small mobile or tablet screens in the top right corner to switch between desktop, mobile, and tablet views.

    What are you likely to find? You might see that your font is a bit too small to be comfortable on a small screen, or that your pages have so much content that a mobile user has to scroll...and scroll….and scroll to get to the good stuff. Or you might find that your links are a little too close together for someone with “ample” thumbs to press comfortably. We have more design tips here to help make sure your mobile website is looking its best.

    Clean your keyboard and phone (seriously)

    If you had to guess what the dirtiest part of your house is, you might look towards the bathroom or the kitchen. But look right in front of you instead. Your keyboard, phone, mouse, and trackpad are some of the dirtiest items you come across every day, mostly because you’re constantly touching them—and you probably clean them less often than your bathroom. The average person touches their face 15 times per hour and touches their phone 9 times per hour and, well, you get the idea.

    You can go all-in and follow this tutorial for removing your keys and giving each one a thorough cleaning (warning, there will be q-tips involved). If you don’t have time for that, just keep a pack of keyboard cleaning wipes or even disinfectant wipes nearby and give your keys an occasional once-over.

    Finally set up your custom email address

    This may be one of those things you’ve just been putting off. If you’re like me, choosing and successfully setting up a domain felt like such an accomplishment that you completely forgot about the email address that’s included. (This is the email account that matches your domain name, like contact@mydomain.com).

    Or maybe you skipped the email address because you didn’t want yet another account to keep track of, with another password, login, and messages to answer.

    But that custom email address can go a long way towards making your website look more professional (especially if you’re currently directing customers to a personal email address or, worse, the “sharkninja27@hotmail.com” email address you’ve been using since high school.)

    Fortunately, it’s really easy to create your custom account and then set up email forwarding so that any messages from your website’s email account can go straight to the inbox of your choice (for example, the one you actually check regularly).

    If you’re not sure where to start, we actually have a new email helper in our Support Center that can help you choose the method that’s right for you.

    New and Improved Blog Features!

    A fresh design and shiny new functions: say hello to the new blog on your Jimdo website. You can now customize your preview image and summary, add tags and customize your URL to improve your SEO, just to name a few highlights.

    You may have already noticed changes to your blog in the past week but now we’ve added even more features—making it easier to create the perfect blog post!

    Preview image and summary

    Blogging has never been easier. If you open your blog post draft, you will notice that your blog post settings now appear on the left-hand side. So you can craft and compose in your main post—then when you’re ready—just add the title, date, summary text and preview image.

    Once you upload and set a custom post preview image and summary, this will then show up on your blog page (instead of using a default image taken from your post). Try it out and see the changes on your blog!

    Custom URL ending

    In the Advanced setting of your blog post, you can now set a custom URL ending (or a slug) and easily copy the post URL directly from the Menu without searching around. Just type a completely different URL name, add your keywords and save it. The new URL will automatically get rid of any invalid characters and change spaces to dashes.

    This is great for SEO, as you can add in those important keywords. Plus shorter URL’s are more readable, user-friendly and easy to share on social media.

    Tag filtered blog page

    If you’re a stickler for organization, you will love our new tag filtered blog page. Tags for your blog post are now clickable and take you to any posts where you’ve used the same tag. Which means visitors can easily browse through the various tags you’ve set up. Once you click on a tag, the blog page will then filter all the posts that you’ve created with that specific tag so you can see them all in one place.

    Please note: You will have to activate the blog page in order to use clickable tags.

    Post management menu

    You will now be able to quickly edit your blog post title and date in the Posts section. So you can quickly fix any typos in the title, set the date and publish it all in the same place. Now, you’ll edit blog post titles and dates from the new menu, rather than in the posts themselves. On the right-hand side, you will be able to just copy, delete or write a new post.

    When you’re ready for the blog to go live you can then activate or deactivate your blog or blog page in the Status section

    Automatic blog page

    All your blog posts will then be neatly displayed on your automatic blog page with an excerpt of your post and the preview image you selected. If you already have a blog page—that’s great. it just stays where it is and you have the added choice to deactivate it if you want. And if you don't, well now it’s even more simple to create one by activating the option.

    We have also made some stylistic adjustments which mean the date of your post will be shown as text on the left-side of your blog post. The blog post headers will now match all other large headings on your website unless they've been modified with the Style Editor, in which case it will stay the same as before. We hope you enjoy the new additions!

    Please note: You may have to check or adjust any custom code that you’ve added in your Header.
